In a field that included some of the top teams in the state, the Stillwater girls' hockey team finished second in the Edina holiday tournament.
The Ponies (7-0 Suburban East Conference, 12-2) fell to host Edina 2-1 in the championship game on Saturday - snapping a 12-game winning streak.
Stillwater opened with a 3-2 overtime victory over Hopkins on Thursday and followed with a 5-2 win over Blaine in the semifinals on Friday.
The Ponies will face another highly-regarded team on Tuesday when they host conference and section rival Roseville at the St. Croix Valley Rec Center. The Raiders are coming off a victory in the Kaposia Holiday Tournament.
Boys hockey
The Stillwater boys' hockey team knocked off rival White Bear Lake 2-1 in overtime on Saturday at Aldrich Arena to cap a busy week.
The Suburban East Conference victory came on the heels of a fifth-place finish in the Bronze Division of the Schwan Cup at Brooklyn Park Arena Dec. 29-Jan. 31. Stillwater (2-2-1 SEC, 6-3-1) bounced back from an opening-round 3-2 loss to Rogers to defeat Farmington 7-1 and Orono 3-2 to claim the consolation title on Wednesday.
Michael Kreutzfeldt notched the game-winner in overtime for the Ponies in Saturday's victory over 15th-ranked White Bear Lake, running their winning streak to three games.
It was the first varsity goal for Kreutzfeldt, who was moved into the varsity lineup after Monday's loss to Rogers.
Tristan Pennella finished with 26 saves for Stillwater, which was outshot 27-18 in the game.
Kyle Mogren's power play goal late in the second period gave the Ponies a 1-0 lead, but White Bear Lake evened the game early in the third period on an unassisted goal by Mike Slator.
Boys basketball
The Stillwater boys' basketball team rebounded from a semifinal loss to Plainview-Elgin Millville to defeat Northfield 74-65 in the third-place game at the Rochester Rotary US Bank Holiday Classic.
The Ponies fell to P-EM 64-54 in the semifinals and the Bulldogs went on to defeat Apple Valley 65-60 in the championship game.
Stillwater, which was the defending champion at this tournament, opened with a 60-45 victory over Rochester Century before falling short to the Bulldogs. Ryan Duxbury finished with 17 points to lead four Ponies in double figures in the semifinals. Paul Franklin and Miles Heller added 11 points apiece while Adam Habisch chipped in with 10.
The Ponies (0-1 SEC, 3-5) also fell to St. Paul Johnson 60-55 on Saturday at Stillwater Area High School. Jesse George led the Ponies with 13 points and Alex Oman chipped in with 10.
Gymnastics
At St. Peter, the Stillwater gymnastics team placed second at the 20th Annual Gustavus Invitational on Saturday. The Ponies posted a score of 133.35 to finish behind first-place Becker (140.15).
Sarah Nelson finished second in the all-around with a score of 35.4, which was her highest total score by more than eight-tenths. Kristina Krenz followed with a fourth-place showing in the all-around with a score of 35.1.
