Boys swimming and diving: Mounds View upends Ponies

NORTH OAKS - A rarity in this millennium, the Stillwater boys' swimming and diving team was upended by Mounds View 61-40 in Thursday's Suburban East Conference dual meet at Chippewa Middle School.

The Ponies (1-1 SEC, 1-1) suffered just its fourth defeat since 2000 - a stretch that has included 98 victories. Mounds View also clipped Stillwater in 2007 and the Ponies fell to Cretin-Derham Hall while tying the Raiders and Mounds View for the conference title a year ago. Maple Grove in 2001 is the only other team to beat Stillwater in a dual meet during the past 12 seasons.

"They were better than we are," Ponies coach Brian Luke said. "They're just very good and we did not rise to the occasion very well. Even if we were going to keep it close, we did not make what I would call an adequate attempt to do it."

The Mustangs stormed out to a 16-2 lead after grabbing the top two spots in the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle. With five-lane scoring in place and Mounds View's strength up front, the Ponies were unable to put a serious dent in that deficit.

Vince Radecke provided two of Stillwater's three first-place finishes while winning the 200 individual medley in 2:04.30 and the 100 butterfly in a time of 55.45.

Liam Gibb (170.30) and Colin Eason (138.05) finished first and second in diving for the Ponies.

Stillwater also received second-place finishes from Paul Knaak in the 50 freestyle (23.09), Evan Maxwell in the 500 freestyle (5:16.34) and the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.

"We found some stuff we can probably work on," Luke said.

n Also on Thursday, Mounds View scored a 53-48 victory over Stillwater in the JV competition.
